About Chalk Hill

Take a drive up Chalk Hill Road, and you will see vineyard vistas through the trees before you’re already in Alexander Valley. Yet it’s one of Sonoma County’s most esteemed winegrowing areas.

Carved out of a curious northeast corner of the Russian River Valley AVA, the Chalk Hill AVA is defined by its warmer climate and volcanic soils. Chalk Hill’s AVA status was awarded in 1983 but revised in 1988. There are more than 1,400 vineyard acres, and just four wineries.

Although Chalk Hill is a sub-appellation of the Russian River Valley AVA, it’s somewhat warmer here, with moderating breezes but less cool fog. From the town of Windsor along Highway 101, Chalk Hill extends east into a jumble of hills, opens to a pretty little valley planted in vineyards, and continues to 1,600 foot elevations tucked between Alexander Valley and Knight’s Valley AVAs.
Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or a budding novice, one of the top-rated wine regions in the US is the Chalk Hill AVA. This scenic location spans 1,400 acres and encompasses over a dozen wineries, creating the ideal spot for a day of wine dabbling. In particular, this sub-appellation of the Russian River Valley AVA and produces some of the most exceptional Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir varietals.

Chalk hill also boasts one of the most ridden roads in the county, Chalk Hill Road.

About Us

Inspired by years of traveling to famous wine regions across the globe and our passion for farm-to-table cuisine, we purchased Margo Estate in 2016 with an eye to its potential as farm, vineyard and retreat.

Cesar is known for his hands-on approach to everything from farming to construction. Attention to detail and getting his hands dirty stone-by-stone at Margo Estate has been Cesar’s labor of love. An avid farmer and gardener, Cesar can recommend some of the best Farmers Markets and “Farm to Table” hot spots in Wine Country.
Mariana is known for her joint passions of wine and outdoor living. For over twenty years in the Bay Area, she has dedicated much of her free time to appreciating the wine industry. She has many friends in the wine business and is happy to provide recommendations for wineries offering public and private tastings in Sonoma. As an outdoor enthusiast, she can also recommend the best hiking, kayaking and cycling spots in the area.

We love entertaining and have created many open entertaining spaces on the estate to maximize opportunities to enjoy the Mediterranean-like climate. The main house on this unique property represents a “modern farmhouse” aesthetic with locally sourced décor, modern conveniences and an expansive deck for indoor-outdoor living.
We have entertained family and friends and they always say our place is slice of paradise. We do too, and love to share our paradise with visitors from all around the world!

Cheers,
Mariana & Cesar
